With our history and geography teacher we prepared a quiz about the E.U and we sent it to our pen-pals. 

A quiz about the European Union

Question A : How European do you feel?

Here are the responses from the EU quiz.  It was very interesting and generated some  good
discussion about what it means to be "European". 
The fishing industry is huge in Shetland and by far the largest
employer - so when pupils had said that Europe doesn't really affect them we
were able to discuss fishing quotas (max number of fish that can be caught
and also when the fish are allowed to be caught) as set out by the EU - which
directly dictates what jobs are available in Shetland. Also we discussed
about British Banks and how they were involved in "bailing out"(rescuing)
other banks and by extention, countries within the EU when they have been
having difficulty through the recession.

Conclusion: We realized that all our pen-pals don't really feel European but they have a good knowledge of Europe in general.
